This is a manual for people who want to change
their style of existence. It describes how to gain
conscious control over what happens to you
.
The book also serves as a check-off list
to help you spot where things went wrong.
But first please read it once straight through.

Page 2

IMAGES

Whatever else it may be, it is also a book of
poems and poems are like a drum, a cloud, an image
of the moon in a bucket of water.

The drum sounds in the palaces of the carefree Gods,
admonishing.
The source of the cloud is the Sea.
The image is a shimmering reflection of reality.

Don’t listen for the sound.
Don’t reach out your hand for the rain.
Don’t try to pin down the moon.
Sit quite still and they’ll appear.

Page 3

CHAPTER FOUR
«The Conscious Universe»

Let’s not question the existence of the universe.
There it is!

Once existing it gains “purpose,» to keep on
existing in more or less the same shape.

It does so by repeating certain simple patterns
over and over again, – the ones that take least
effort, – globes and flames, wheels and spirals.

Man however is a spontaneous being and doesn’t
like to have to repeat himself, unless it feels good.

So, if the existence of the universe somehow
depends on his co-operation, it had better be quite
tasty and exciting, and it is

Page 4

MINIMUM EFFORT

The universe fills all space with splendor, using
precisely the minimum effort necessary to achieve
each effect. Man is a creature of the universe.
Should he be different?

Precision-use of energy requires skill and grace,
qualities brought to perfection by the natural
process of experience. – Or you can use your head!
If you know certain skills are neccessary, not just
to survive but to truly fulfill yourself, why not
go out and deliberately try to acquire them?

Some people gain a strange sort of satisfaction out
of having to learn things the hard way. They also
make it tough on those who love them and are involved.
Conscious learning takes minimum effort. It’s called
“using your head”.

Page 5

A. HOW TO USE YOUR HEAD

There are 2 ways to solve a problem:

by counting, discounting or trying to account
for things «by the numbers».
by looking for and identifying the patterns.
a) Take a good look at the situation
and pick out significant-seeming patterns
of color, movement or whatever.

b) Search your mind for an analogy,
a situation where similar patterns occur
but in a different context.
(Example: The movement of planets in
the Solar System provides an anology
for movement in a han family.)

c) Draw your own conclusions.

“As above, so below!”

Page 6

INTER-RELATIONS

To find out what’s going on we watch the natural
flow of events and draw conclusions. Chopping
the flow into numbered segments prevents us from
recognizing the inter-relations of the whole.

RULE:
“Any form of NUMERICAL operation, any concern
with numbers of any kind, prevents the ORGANIC
patterns from forming and being recognized.»

DON’T try to “figure” things out. (You’ll miss the
most important aspect anyway.)
DO quiet your mind, (divorce it from outside concern,)
and watch in silence as the patterns develop
and blossom. Then you’ll “get the picture,»
in a flash.

Page 7

WORKING WITH ANALOGIES

A “working» analogy is one that works, one where the
patterns overlap and conclusions are useful, helpful.
«Where the shoe fits…»

When the patterns don’t match or something sticks
out you know there’s trouble and what to do:
riding the freeways, mind a million…
suddenly, red lights flickering, 2-3 miles
ahead … you come down, touch the wheel,
and carefully steer your way around the…

The ideal analogy works on all levels, also sideways.
It’s allegorically, electronically, psychosomatically,
intergalactically, universally valid.
“If it walks like a duck, squawks like a duck,
looks like a duck, it MIGHT JUST BE…»

When in doubt pick the graceful analogy.

Page 8

B. ANALOGIES OF CONSCIOUSNESS

Imagine a hair-thin tube through which a gas is
piped to feed a small flame burning in the middle
of a large dark hall. The light radiates outward
in a globe to illumine the surroundings. Meanwhile
oxygen is swirling inward from the outskirts toward
the blue-gold-pink flame in the center, to be
converted into light which…

This image illustrates, by analogy, the out-and-in-flow
of energy in the universe. The two forms of
movement obey 2 different sets of laws:
1.those of radiant energy, (heat, light etc.,
which move in straight lines through space,)
2.those of fluids (which flow or gather in drops.)
The inter-action of these shapes the characteristic
patterns of consciousness, of the universe and the jellyfish.

The 2 forms of energy are recognized as «positive»
and «negative» equivalents, light and dark, male and
femele, the journey out and the return to the Source.

Page 9

OUT AND BACK

The journey out starts from a giant energy-converter
called “The Central Sun.» – Visualize if you will
a globe of gold hanging in space, pulsing,
surrounded by spectrum-colored shells of
radiation (diffraction-patterns) spreading outward
like ripples on the surface of a pool.

Particles of radiation drive from this Sun
through space until all energy and momentum are
exhausted. Then, mere «ghosts” of their former
selves without mass or weight, they’re caught up
once more in the suction-field of the Central
Converter and swept in ever-faster ever-narrowing
spirals back toward the Source. (Having no mass
they soon accelerate beyond the speed of light
and are lost to sight.)

It’s called «The Timeless Ocean,» this dark and
tenuously empty in-bound swirl. To our slow senses
it “turns” slowly backwards, like a fast-spinning wheel.
The particles, flowing at near infinite speeds, touch
everywhere at once and to touch one is to touch all.

Page 10

FLAME-FIELDS

When a spark from the Central Sun travels through
this Timeless Ocean it condenses a small
flame-shaped field of energy about it-
much like a grain of dust condenses a raindrop
about it as it travels through a cloud.-
Each field is a universe in miniature and lasts
as long as the spark.

These fields flit about with the life-like
(Brownian) movement of a gas, attracting and
repelling each other at random. A strong source
of energy polarizes and “captures” them and they
dance about it like midges on a summer afternoon.

Page 11

UNIVERSAL MOVEMENT

Polarized fields of energy are said to exert
an «attractive” force. – They react to each
other’s presence and move toward each other,
generally the smaller toward the larger. (This
in accordance with the electro-hydro-dynamic LAW
of the universe.) The resulting patterns
of behavior are the same for atoms, amoebae,
sunflowers, small rodents, human beings, the
galaxy, the universe itself.

Page 13

CHAPTER FIVE
«The Law»

Any body which absorbs energy from one side must
expel it from the other (or explode.) The result
is movement against the flow of energy, toward
the source.

Deviant behavior, – straying, holding back or
retreating, – results in energy-imbalances which
we experience as heat, interior tension
and pain. Prolonged or severe deviation
results in a usually unpleasant death.

Page 14

A. GUIDELINES

The general consequences of deviation are
some sort of set-back due to lack of energy.

Erratic movement, (skittering around at random angles
to the flow,) reduces the intake and increases the demand.

Holding back, (giving up, sliding, drifting,)
results in progressive apathy. Not only do you
soon exhaust the energy in your personal environment,
you also poison it with your own waste-products
(which are no longer carried off down-stream).

Retreating, (heading in the wrong direction,)
does provide energy of sorts, but of a polarity
opposite to the one your organism requires.
“Circuits” decay, life-supporting processes
break down. Also the supply dwindles steadily.

These unpleasant effects disappear the moment
you get back on track.

Page 15

THE RULES OF HUMAN CONDUCT

The universe is a flow of energy. Likes waves on
a river we arise from it for some brief moments,
and sink back into it. The shape and duration of
our existence is determined by the laws which
govern the movement of energy.

These laws, expressed in human terms, become
Rules of Conduct defining the do’s and don’ts
of day-to-day behavior. By paying attention to these
Rules we make sure our personal flow of energy
blends harmoniously with the universal.

There are 4 Rules.

Page 16

THE FOUR RULES

  1. THE RULE OF BALANCE

Rule:
«Energy OUT must balance energy IN.»

All IN and no OUT causes constipation.
The more you put out the more you get back.

(Under energy you may understand the «E» of
Einstenin’s equation, food, love, money, or whatever.)

  1. THE RULE OF QUALITY

Rule:
«The QUALITY of the out-put determines
the quality of the return.»
Whatever you put out, resentment and anger or
forgiveness and love, that’s how you get it back.

  1. THE RULE OF CUMULATIVE EFFECT

Rule:
«All energy returns to the sender,
MULTIPLIED BY 10.»

This is also known as the «snowball-effect,»
…all actions set off chains of reactions
of the same quality.

One careless match can cause a 15,000 arce forest fire.
One grain of wheat can feed the world.

4.THE RULE OF ULTIMATE PURPOSE

Rule:
«The ultimate purpose of every action is
to get us closer to a RELIABLE source.»

( Only such a source delivers enough energy,
in the long run, to provide for the trimmings

grace, courtesy, fair play – which alone
makee a thing of beauty out of an otherwise deadly
game of survival.)
Page 18

THEIR APPLICATION

It’s sometimes called the “Great Game,» the way
these Rules apply in daily life. It’s an almost
instinctive process as in a fast-breaking ball-game.
The action is natural, spontaneous, exciting,…

“DON’T BREAK THE FLOW!”

To follow the Rules is to use your head.
It assures CONTINUED existence with
minimum effort.

Page 19

B. THE LOVE ETHIC

“Good luck» is the consequence of doing things right,
from the start.
The consequence of offending against the Rules is
a condition of pain.

Pain is not «punishment” or “retribution,” unless
you choose to think of it that way. It’s the natural
penalty for misusing energy. It stops the moment
you stop offending.
An offense is any action which is offensive.
There’s no such thing as a «good» offense.
There are no exceptions for special cases or
worthy causes.
Ignorance is no excuse.

Page 20

THE ORIGIN OF PAIN

Ignorance is the root-cause of pain,

Being ignorant you try to figure things out …
this produces explanations and rationalizations…
you pin it down to something you can touch
and measure …
relative values are defined…
definite goals are set…
they form a basis for making decisions …
action commences …
reaction is born …
chains of reactions sprout and proliferate…
the Game begins to get serious and Rules of Conduet
go out of the window…
consequences pile up hot and heavy as each action
comes to maturity and payment is demanded…
The result is bewilderment and pain.

It you want to see how it works, look about!

Page 21

THE CONDITION OF PAIN

The acid of self-doubt when you first enter a room
full of strangers…
or in the thin grey dawn when no one else is awake…
guilt and the fear of future guilt…
the endless wearying chase of the mind in circles
after an ever-elusive answer …
the «accidents” which could have been avoided if…
the things that go wrong at the last moment…
the love that tears itself apart…
the mindless insensate «hostility” of the world…
that is the condition of pain,
the consequence of ignoring the Rules,
of breaking the Law.

Page 22

THE APPLICATION OF THE LAW
TO HUMAN CONDUCT AND AFFAIRS

The tide that follows the moon, nature changing
in ancient rhythm as the Earth swings about the Sun,
and Sun and stars and galaxies moving on their
ordered courses, each – electron, speckled trout
or universe, – each moves obedient to the Law.

There’s nothing to explain, no need to ask to whom
it applies; the meaning is totally clear.

«For practical purposes there are only
TWO beings in the universe,
YOU and EVERYBODY ELSE.
It is against the Law to cause pain
to the body or consciousness of either.»

Page 23

PATTERNS OF LOVE

If you want to stop hurting, stop causing pain!
To guard against causing pain, adopt the
behavior-patterns of love.

Patterns of love are easily recognized; they’re
loving, gentle, gracious, effortless.
Love is the basic motivation.
Love speaks in the gesture and the deed.
Love is the quality of the (10-fold) return.
Patterns of love produce a characteristic tingle
which lets you KNOW you’re headed in the right direction.

There are only 2 types of behavior-patterns;
those which arouse the «hostility” of the environment,
those which generate love, co-operation, good will.
There is no middle ground.

Page 25

CHAPTER SIX
«The Teacher»

When the Law is broken day after day,
when bodies are broken day after day,
when there is suffering and pain and misery, day after day,
then the Teacher arises and reminds the people of the Law.

He may not use force, he may not impose himself,
he may not scream his agony and frustration
at seeing all his lovers and sisters and brothers
torture themselves day after day in bewildered
confused helplessness.
No, he may not scream at them!

Instead he teaches patiently, persistently, using
skill and cunning to persuade them gradually
to stop hurting each other and pay attention to the Law.

Page 26

LESSON I

This is a rose!
It has this color and that shape,
petals, pistils, leaves and thorns.
And all these words are meaningless
if YOU’ve never seen a rose.

This is the Law!
It has been taught, preached, spelled out,
nailed down, raised up and promulgated, age
after age, time after time since timeless beginnings.
And all these words are meaningless
if YOU don’t know the Law.

Page 27

THE TURNING OF THE WHEEL

The Wheel of Destiny seems often slow
but it grinds patiently and with infinite precision.
This is the Law!

If you wish to be happy in this world,
if you wish to find peace,
if you want to know what love is,
then stop hurting yourself and each other.

If you wish to see peace on Earth,
if you wish to see happiness raise up the people,
if you wish to stand in the light of day,
face the Sun
naked, open, without armor or pretense,
if you wish to stand up and for once be yourself…
know who you are …
be free …

then you must help.
Then you must put the happiness and comfort of all
others above your own.
Then you must teach.
That is the Law!

Page 28

LESSON II

There are 10 steps to becoming a teacher.

Protect the life and happiness of all,
Give whatever is needed, cash, time, love.
3 Live a full rich life but don’t forget
what you are.
Know how to tell the truth.
Demonstrate the ways of love for all to see.
Consciously set out to make your life
beautiful, peaceful, happy.
Use all your talent and ingenuity to induce
others to do likewise.
Show respect for all existence.
Always be on the look-out to improve
your performance, expand awareness,
clarify understanding…
and you’ll experience reality.
Page 29

NATURAL DEVELOPMENT

Change is a process of natural growth and evolution.
It takes time, hours, days, weeks, but it doesn’t
have to take years. Also it’s irreversible.

The seed in winter is protected by a tough shell
and an icy crust of earth. But when the first warm
rays of the sun soften the soil and the first
trickle of moisture touches the seed, there starts
a process of germination, of bubbling and fermentation.
There comes a time of sprouting and pushing,
of pressure and counter-pressure, a time it would seem
when all law and order break down …

until at last one hair-thin tendril cracks the long-
protective once-so-comfortable shell, thickens,
spreads and stretches up into the light.

Page 30

LESSON III

THIS IS A ROSE.
THIS IS THE LAW.
THE LAW IS LOVE!

Page 31

HOW TO TRANSFORM THE WORLD

Let everybody go around acting as if they loved
each other.
To start the process, do it yourself.

of the
«Manual for Apprentice Gods.»

APPENDIX

Page 33

HOW TO CHOOSE A COURSE OF ACTION

Our consciousness functions like an analog-computer.
It allows us to project the development of an action
ahead of present phase and time. This gives us a
chance to check it out for hidden pitfalls.

There are 3 test-questions:

WILL IT WORK?
WILL IT HURT ANYONE?
IS IT PRETTY?
It must compute out on all levels-
practical, moral, ethical, aesthetic.
To prevent harm make sure it benefits all!
YOU must be happy doing it, after doing it,
about having done it.
“When in doubt, don’t!»

Page 34

HOW TO SUCCEED WITH MINIMUM EFFORT

Whatever you wish to accomplish, make money,
love, or change the world, be sure to check-off
the following 7 points at least once a week.

ENERGY You really want to do it?
PURPOSE You got it clear in mind?
LOVE It’s the only acceptable pattern of action.
BEAUTY Make it attractive so others
will want to help you.
PERSISTENCE Don’t scatter your energies,
focus them.
PATIENCE Don’t give it one whack and then walk.
Keep up a rhythmical pressure.
PEACEM ake sure all energy flows freely,
all bills are paid,
and the benefits are
enjoyed by all.
Pause frequently to quiet your mind
and clear it of outside distractions.

Page 35

HOW TO QUIET YOUR MIND

The Shri Yantra mandala produces after-images,
INSIDE your head. This diverts your attention
from OUTSIDE concerns and quiets the mind.

Instructions

Look at the center of the mandala.
Breathe easily, IN through the nose,
flaring the nostrils,
OUT through the mouth,
6 times, – slowly.
3.Close your eyes and focus them up into
the middle of your forehead.
The emerging after-image resembles the Central Sun.
Use your will to brighten the colors.

Page 36

HOW TO TELL UP FROM DOWN

There are 3 characteristic signs which appear when
you’re headed in the right direction:

  1. There’s an immediately noticeable improvement in the style of your daily existence.
  2. You gradually assume conscious control over what happens to you.
  3. It feels good.
